- Buyers: Protect yourself. Never buy a used car in California without a current passing smog certificate in hand. If you buy a vehicle that fails a smog check later, the cost of the expensive emissions repairs will fall squarely on your shoulders.
The 90-Day Window: A smog certificate received for a change of ownership is valid for 90 days from the date of the test. If you don’t sell the car within those 90 days, you will need to get it tested again before transferring the title.
Are Any Vehicles Exempt From a Title-Transfer Smog Check?

1. The 4-Year Rule for Newer Vehicles
